When the heartbeat of an event aligns with its mission, something extraordinary happens. That’s exactly what you get with Michel DeQuevedo, the powerhouse behind the Fight To End Cancer’s entertainment experience.
As the official head of entertainment for FTEC, Michel brings not only rhythm and energy—but also deep personal meaning—to every note, beat, and moment he helps orchestrate.
A gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and percussionist, Michel’s musical journey began in Mexico City, where he picked up his first set of drumsticks at the age of eight. His early talent and passion for rhythm quickly turned into a lifelong pursuit of mastery. He studied at the prestigious Escuela Superior de Música and the Academia de Música Fermatta, the latter at the time affiliated with the renowned Berklee College of Music. His training gave him the foundation to explore a rich and eclectic musical path—one that would take him around the world.
Over the past three decades, Michel has performed with some of Latin America’s and Canada’s most celebrated artists, including Grammy Award-winning acts like Julieta Venegas, Molotov, and Natalia Lafourcade. He was also part of the acclaimed band “El Son y la Rumba,” where he performed alongside jazz legend Luis Gasca (known for collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Santana, and Janis Joplin), and contributed to the soundtrack for Gabrielle Salvatores’ Academy Award-winning film “Puerto Escondido.”
Since relocating to Canada in 2005, Michel has become one of the country’s most sought-after live and session musicians. He’s shared stages with Juno Award winners Walk Off the Earth, Richard Underhill, and Quique Escamilla, and performed at iconic venues like Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, and The Rex Hotel, as well as internationally renowned venues such as The House of Blues, Blue Note, and Whisky A-Go-Go. His versatility and ability to blend seamlessly across genres—from Latin to jazz to funk—make him a uniquely dynamic performer.
Behind the Rhythm Lies A Story of Extraordinary Resilience
Video: Diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer (NET) in 2021, NET patient Michel shares how the lack of information and awareness of his uncommon diagnosis inspired him to start a patient support group in Mexico called NETs Mexico.
In recent years, Michel has been navigating a deeply personal battle: he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, a rare and often misunderstood form of the disease. Rather than let the diagnosis define him, Michel has turned his experience into a platform for awareness, education, and connection. He speaks candidly and compassionately about the emotional and psychological complexities of living with cancer, often highlighting the importance of self-expression and creativity as healing tools.
Michel DeQuevedo receives recognition for his outstanding dedication to NET (Neuroendocrine Tumor) patient advocacy, honoring his impactful work in raising awareness and supporting the cancer community.
Michel’s advocacy work has been recognized internationally. He was recently honored with an award for outstanding dedication to NET (neuroendocrine tumor) patient advocacy, acknowledging his tireless efforts to give voice to patients and create community through vulnerability and storytelling. His journey has been featured in several interviews and media outlets, including his appearance on the podcast “Cancer, Curiosity, and the Strength of Fragility”, and his powerful feature in the International Neuroendocrine Cancer Alliance (INCA), where he shares how music and mindfulness have become lifelines through treatment and uncertainty.
His Connection to FTEC is More Than Professional—It’s Profoundly Personal.
Through his role with the Fight To End Cancer, Michel not only curates and leads the live entertainment that electrifies the gala each year—he channels his lived experience into every moment of performance. Whether it’s through vibrant Latin grooves, soul-stirring melodies, or energetic collaborations with dancers and DJs, Michel brings the gala to life with emotional depth, passion, and purpose.
“Music connects us in ways words can’t,” Michel says. “And in the fight to end cancer, that connection is everything.”
His presence at FTEC serves as both an anchor and a catalyst—reminding us that cancer touches every corner of the human experience, and that healing isn’t just physical. It’s emotional, spiritual, and deeply communal.
We are proud to have Michel DeQuevedo as part of the FTEC family. His story, his music, and his heart continue to inspire our mission and elevate the spirit of every event. He is not just a performer—he is a living example of the courage, connection, and commitment that defines the Fight To End Cancer.
Together we can end cancer once and for all!
