Joe’s Barber Shop was opened by Joe Cini in the Junction’s Maltese community in 1953. It had a checkerboard tile floor and black leather barber’s chairs. For almost six decades, through the neighbourhood’s rise, fall and rise again, Joe was the go-to guy for an old-school cut. And then at age 76, he handed it down to his daughter, Joanna Cini. Joanna and her husband, Franco Gatto, reopened it as The Barber’s Daughter in the spring of 2012. The salon looks a little more modern and now offers a full-service menu of cuts, colours, highlights and blowouts, but behind its antique etched-glass front door the family vibe remains.

“Our clients have been describing the space as having a cozy and friend feel, which is exactly what we wanted,” says Cini, who has been in the business 18 years.
The Fight to End Cancer is especially meaningful for Joanna as both her parents have battled cancer. Her mom was fortunate enough to win her fight. Her father, Joe, however, lost his 13 year fight in May 2014.
ABOUT FIGHT TO END CANCER
Founded in 2011, the Fight To End Cancer has donated over $750,000.00, in support of cancer research, with proceeds going directly to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
The year-long fundraising efforts of the Fight To End Cancer are celebrated each year in an event like no other. Featuring a new group of white-collar men and women, with no prior boxing experience, Fight To End Cancer’s annual black tie gala concludes months of their intense training, in a sanctioned Olympic-style boxing event.
Fight To End Cancer has quickly grown to become a premium fundraiser and showcases these brave individuals, as they lace up their gloves and step into our ring to help knock out cancer.
