Sara Haghighat-joo

  • 23 years old
  • Fighting Since 2011
  • 78 amateur fights
  • Current 54kg National Champion
  • Ranked #1 in Canada and #2 in the Pan Americas
  • Tied at #18 in the World AIBA Rankings
  • Originally from Coquitlam, BC

23 year old Sara Haghightat-joo found her way into boxing at the age of 16.  She decided to join a boxing gym and give an individual sport a try, when she was sick and tired of high school team sports.  She fell absolutely in love with it after a short few months and began to spar.  It wasn’t long before she had her first fight at the BC Golden Gloves.  She won both as a youth and in the senior division.  She has grown to love boxing more and more each day since then, and can’t think of anything better to do with her time.

“My coach means a lot to me as he continues to believe in me and no matter what hiccups we’ve encountered in the past he always helps me push past them”

Sara finished 2 years of her undergrad in Human Kinetics.  Right now school – she transferred from UBC to University of Guelph – is currently on hold so that she can focus full time on boxing.  She is travelling with Team Canada, gaining as much experience as possible, to pursue the Olympics in the near future.
Sara’s nationality is Iranian, born into a Persian family and she is fluent in Farsi.  Part time she works at Movati Athletic Club which allows her to stay busy in the fitness industry, in her free time.

Sara represented Canada at the AMBC Continental Championships in Honduras earlier this year, bringing home second place on the international stage.

This year Sara has kept incredibly busy travelling the world, representing Canada on the international stage. She traveled to Sweden, where she won at one of the worlds biggest female competitions and won best technical boxer.  She represented Canada at the Continental Championships, in Honduras, where she placed second in the tournament.  She took part in an international training camp in Ireland and in Bulgaria participated in an all Females AIBA Tournament.
There’s nothing stopping her, with her sights on Tokyo 2020!

Sara’s Fight To End Cancer

I didn’t know my grandfather too well, but I did see my mother suffer from her father’s passing, due to cancer.  It was very hard to see her go through such pain.  I also saw legendary coach Adrian Teodorescu suffer from lymphoma last year in the hospital and it left me feeling very hopeless.  It’s sad to see someone just fade away in front of your eyes and not be able to do anything for them.  Fight to End Cancer, to me, means that we continue to have this opportunity, to contribute to finding a cure.  I believe that as technology and research evolves, we will find a cure to beat this disease, and no longer allow it to leave our families and friends in pain.
