Mark Smither has been a longtime supporter of the Fight To End Cancer.  He fought at our inaugural Fight To End Cancer Gala in 2012, in a bout against Josh O’Reilly.  It was an all-out war, deemed one of the best fights of the year.  Mark started boxing at the age of 13 and decided right then and there, after walking into the Uptown Boxing club, that he was going to become a champion.

“I met my coach Jack Ireland in 2006, and that day changed my life. Uptown Boxing is a family, it’s a way of life”

Jack Ireland comes to the gym every day and puts his heart and soul into every single fighter, teaching them not only boxing skills, but building character as well.  He has taken numerous youth off the streets and guided them into becoming respectable and charismatic individuals.  Your race, religion or political views do not matter at Uptown.  Only your character and work ethic do.

“This boxing club is my home and my coach Jack, has guided me into the man that I have become.  Everyone always used to tell me ‘I didn’t have what it takes’, and well…. Jack always used to tell me that I did.”

Mark has fought some of the best amateur fighters in the world, with over 100 fights in the sport of boxing.  He’s won numerous championship Gold medals, and attributes his success to hard work and his coach Jack’s perseverance in guiding him.

Words From Mark

I’ve always been a very passionate person in everything I do.  I am currently trying to become a Police officer and I work hard everyday to achieve this goal.  I graduated from the police foundations program back in 2013 and have been volunteering my time in my community ever since.  I currently volunteer at my boxing club as both a mentor and trainer.  I also volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.  I love helping people and pushing others to achieve their goals.  I am a very outdoors kind of person and I enjoy running, rollerblading and have always been up for an adventure.  I am persistent in everything I do and I believe that’s why I’ve had so much success in the boxing ring – I never give up!

Mark’s Fight To End Cancer

My grandfather, John McBain, passed away from lung cancer when I was just a young boy.  I never got a chance to really meet or I don’t remember him, but from what my family says he was an amazing man.  My whole family was affected by his passing because he was such an inspiring human being.  I wish I was able to meet him, but unfortunately cancer took his life.
I will be fighting in memory of my grandfather, and all the others affected by cancer. The Fight for Cancer means more than just one fight, it’s a representation of everyone standing together and overpowering this horrible disease and bringing support to all whom is affected by it. I am so happy and thrilled to be fighting again in this event and being apart of such a fantastic and meaningful event.
