Lung cancer survivor, Santiago Lange, makes history in Rio!

What a battle this Olympian had to face in the last couple of years. What if you were told that you had the biggest battle of your life coming up and you needed to put your Olympic dreams on hold? How would you react? This is exactly what happened with Argentinean Olympic Sailor, Santiago Lange.
Last year, Santiago was diagnosed with lung cancer, but he didn’t let that get in his way of making it to the Olympics, once again.  As a treatment method, Santiago had his left lung partially removed after the diagnosis, but as he says, “the hardship only made him work harder”.
All of Santiago’s hard work, dedication, and fight paid off in Rio, as he took to the biggest sporting stage in the world and gave it all he had. He and his partner, Cecilia Carranza, won Gold in the Narca 17 Mixed Multihull race. After winning the race, Santiago broke down into tears, as he became the oldest Gold medalist in the Rio games at the age of 54.

The sight of his two sons, who were also competing at the games, running and swimming towards the boat to congratulate and hug their father was a beautiful sight to see. After his victory, Lange spoke to reporters and said, “This may help to give strength to many people who are going through what I’ve been through, but I prefer to focus on what we did athletically. The disease has nothing to do with it, it was a stone in the road. I became obsessed with getting to Rio very well prepared and we did.”
Lange didn’t let cancer stop his dream and we should take inspiration from this great Olympian!
