This September, the Cairns family and Hawk Ridge Golf Club are uniting once again for the annual Golf To End Cancer Tournament, an inspiring day of sport, community, and purpose.
With every swing of the club, participants are helping drive groundbreaking cancer research and care through the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (PMCF)—one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.
And this year, there’s even more reason to celebrate: the tournament is officially SOLD OUT!
From golfers and sponsors to donors and families joining for lunch, the outpouring of support has been extraordinary. This powerful community response reflects not only the Cairns family’s resilience but also their deeply personal mission to support PMCF, where they have experienced life-saving cancer care firsthand.
Liz Cairns: A Story of Strength and Hope
At the heart of this event is the remarkable story of Liz Cairns. A beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Liz was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. What followed has been nothing short of extraordinary—a journey defined by courage, resilience, and the unwavering love of her family.
This year, Liz has been responding well to treatment, a testament to the expertise and innovation at Princess Margaret. With her trademark positivity and determination, she continues to inspire everyone around her. Liz is excited to attend the tournament and connect with the community that has rallied behind her and her family since the beginning.
Her story reminds us all why this event matters: every donation, every round played, and every act of support fuels the fight against cancer—not just for Liz, but for millions of families facing this disease worldwide.

Hawk Ridge Golf Club: More Than Just a Course
Hawk Ridge Golf Club has long been a cornerstone of Orillia’s sporting and social community. With its pristine greens and welcoming atmosphere, it offers the perfect backdrop for this meaningful event. More than just a host, Hawk Ridge has embraced the Cairns family’s mission as its own, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the fight to end cancer.
This partnership demonstrates the true power of community: when local families, businesses, and organizations come together, they can fuel change that reaches far beyond their own backyard.
Liz’s story is also a call to awareness: lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in both Canada and the U.S., claiming more lives annually than breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers combined. And yet, it remains stigmatized, underfunded, and often misunderstood. An estimated 20% of lung cancer patients have never smoked—a number that continues to rise.
The Power of Community and Sponsors
The success of the 2025 Golf To End Cancer Tournament would not be possible without the generosity of sponsors, donors, and participants. From local businesses sponsoring holes to families making heartfelt tributes to loved ones, every act of support adds momentum to this vital cause.
Sponsorships are not simply names on signs—they represent hope, remembrance, and solidarity. For many, sponsoring a hole or donating items is a way to honour a family member or friend touched by cancer. These visible reminders scattered across the course remind golfers that they are part of something much bigger than a game: a collective movement to end cancer.
The Cairns family has expressed deep gratitude for the community’s involvement, noting that this grassroots support is what has kept the event growing year after year.
“We couldn’t do this without the people who show up—whether it’s by golfing, sponsoring, or even just sharing encouragement. Every bit counts,” says Rennie Cairns.
Reflecting on Last Year’s Impact
The 2024 tournament set a new benchmark, raising significant funds that directly supported PMCF’s leading-edge research. But beyond the financial impact, it strengthened the bond within the community. Families gathered, friendships were forged, and stories of resilience were shared across the greens.
This year promises to build on that momentum, with more participants, more sponsors, and even greater awareness being raised. For Liz and her family, seeing the community unite around this cause has been a powerful source of encouragement and strength.
Looking Ahead
As the Cairns family, Hawk Ridge Golf Club, and an ever-growing community of supporters unite once again, one thing is clear: hope is stronger than fear, and love is greater than cancer.
With a sold-out event, a record turnout, and countless supporters rallying behind Liz’s journey, the 2025 Golf To End Cancer Tournament is more than just a fundraiser. It is a celebration of resilience, community, and the belief that together, we can—and will—end cancer.
Together we can end cancer once and for all!
